I’m happy to introduce my second featured mompreneur. Before meeting Mandy, I had no idea what FBA stood for. Who knew it was a successful means of earning an income (harnessing the power of Amazon!) for some of the business women who really focus on it? Learn more about FBA and Mandy, below.
Tell us a little about you.
I am currently a full-time mom (haha) and also a full-time entrepreneur. I have been married to my husband for what will be four years on March 18th. We have three beautiful girls! Earlier in the summer, my husband accepted a job on the Eastern Shore in Maryland, working as a full-time middle school teacher. We relocated out of Baltimore and to the Eastern Shore in June 2015. We love the area, the new job, and our new church! When my husband began his teaching career, he learned about a program at a private college in Annapolis that offers a Master’s Degree for Classical Education teachers – enter entrepreneur idea. We needed to make money during the summer so that my husband could pursue his Masters.
What is your current business? Explain it a little bit for those who may not have heard of this.
My current business is running a storefront through FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon). Basically, what I do is I send in product (mostly used books, CDs and albums with some retail products thrown in) to Amazon’s warehouses and Amazon ships them to customers on my behalf (for a fee).
Why did you pick this particular business? How did you get turned on to it?
I picked this business because it required little capital and as much or as little time as I am able to dedicate to my business. I got turned on to it through a friend of mine who had been pursuing an Amazon business pretty successfully.
What is your biggest challenge as you work to establish and grown your business?
My biggest challenge is dedicating certain times each day/week to focus on my business. I’m getting better about having certain times (Monday evenings, Tuesday when my mother’s helper comes and a few hours when my husband goes to the gym, where childcare is provided!). But definitely creating a schedule was my biggest challenge, as well as not allowing work to be my constant focus! I’m slowly learning to turn it off and focus on WHY I’m working instead of always just focusing on my progress/growth.
With small children at home, how do you make time for it (alluded to above!)?
I hired a mother’s helper for three hours a week and I try to work one evening when my husband is home with the girls as well as two other evenings when he takes the girls to the gym with him, for a total of about 6 – 10 hours per week.
What else should we know about you and your business?
I’ve grown my business from zero to about $4,250 in 4 months – I try to maintain consistency and the way that I grow my Amazon FBA business is that I put all of my profit back into my business. I purchase tools that help me and I’m learning to say no to other things in order to say YES to growth in 2016. I set financial goals for our family and I know that by dedicating my time to my business during this chapter of our life, we will be able to better enjoy the years to come and do what we hope to do in the future!
